On he 18th annual protest against police brutality in the Canadian city of Montreal when heavily un-noticed and unreported within the mainstream Canadian media. Unfortunately for the protesters the police deemed the march illegal and proceeded to take actions against what started as a peaceful protest against police violence.

“Using a loudspeaker, police declared it illegal within minutes because they weren’t provided with an itinerary, as required under a municipal bylaw.

Helmeted officers on bikes and horseback, and later in riot gear, forced many of the protesters onto a side street and surrounded them.

In all, more than 280 people were detained and each was given a $638 ticket for breaking the bylaw, according to police.

Another five people were arrested and two people suffered minor injuries.

Shortly after 7 pm, four hours after the demonstration began, the last of the tickets were still being handed out, said police spokesman Ian Lafreniere.” – Montreal Gazzette.[Link]

Like a page out of the G20 arrests in Toronto, once again law officials have taken aim at it’s own citizens.

“Canadian police surrounded an annual protest against police brutality in Montreal, arresting 288 people before the demonstration had barely started. The police claim the protest was illegal as the participants did not warn the authorities of their itinerary.Montreal’s 18th annual protest against police brutality was cut dramatically short Saturday when police rounded up the participants. Minutes into the demonstration, riot officers converged on Jean-Talon Street and began detaining protesters. According to protesters there was a strong police presence, with police horses, cars and a helicopter on the scene”

In fact news groups like Russian Television (RT.com) had already picked up the story and reported on it widely. Really putting in to context the amount of filtering and biased reporting on the part of North American media.

Canadian should all be concerned about the decline of our rights and standing as citizen of this country. When we no longer have a place to speak, this in no longer a democracy.
